Manifesting Peacefulness To Relieve Suffering
Every day we’re constantly bombarded with too many demands, stresses, and fears. Many of us also have to cope with long term illnesses, anxiety, grief, pain and conflict that makes life much more challenging to manage and enjoy. The good news is that relief is right at your fingertips. Sound too good to be true? Read on to see how a seemingly simple technique has actually yielded profound results, even in the war torn areas of Afghanistan.
Recently, my friend Sherry flew to Afghanistan on a humanitarian mission, a land where not a single child has known peace in his or her lifetime. Traveling with a translator, Sherry visited a children’s hospital ward, where all the babies were crying hysterically. Despite all their attending mothers’ efforts, the crying just couldn’t be stopped.
Sherry walked into the ward and asked the translator to tell the first mother that she could be trusted. She then showed the mother how to hold her baby’s fingers, one by one, for a couple minutes each. The baby stopped crying, and then something miraculous occurred. That mother taught all the other mothers and ALL of the babies stopped crying! Who knew there was such a simple way to yield huge results for those experiencing loss, isolation, pain and suffering?

Local practitioner Deborah Myers, Director of Health At Your Finger Tips, explains that these finger holds are from Jin Shin Jyutsu (pronounced jit-sue), an ancient Japanese system of working with acupressure energy points to relief stress, pain, and suffering by calming the body, mind, and spirit. In fact, Deborah refers to the finger holds as “jumper cables”, in reference to how holding the fingers literally jump starts the body’s own healing systems.
The first time I had a Jin Shin Jyutsu treatment with Deborah Myers, my body let go of a pain in my shoulder that I had been carrying for three years. It brought tears to my eyes because it left so easily, when nothing else had worked. Then by learning and doing simple self-help acupressure techniques, I have been able to re-pattern my body’s way of being and reacting, as I released chronic issues and increased my sense of well-being.
To begin your own practice, start by lightly wrapping the fingers of one hand around the back of your thumb of the other hand for a couple of minutes or until you feel a pulse in the back of your thumb. Then switch hands and hold the other thumb. Continue by moving through the rest of your fingers, holding each one for a couple of minutes (or as much time as is possible) before moving onto the next finger.
Practicing the finger holds of Jin Shin Jyutsu will relieve anxiety, activating calm, relaxation, balance and comfort, to generally bring more peacefulness to your life. And you do not need to believe this will work to see results!
